The UN expert's comment on the violence in Manipur is rejected by India as "presumptive and misleading."

India responded to the violence in Manipur by stating that the experts' statements resulted from their ignorance of the northeastern states and the actions done by the Indian government.

On Monday, India criticised the statements made by UN experts regarding the violence in Manipur and referred to them as "unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading." India's answer was that the experts' comments were made because they didn't comprehend the northeastern states and the actions taken by the Indian government.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations Office issued a statement in which it stated, "The Permanent Mission of India completely rejects the news release as it is not only unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading, but also betrays a complete lack of understanding on the situation in Manipur and the steps taken by Government of India to address it."

According to the statement's addition, "Indian law enforcement officials and security personnel are dedicated to handling law-and-order crises strictly in accordance with the principles of legal clarity, necessity, proportionality, and non-discrimination.

A Special Procedure Mandate Holders (SPMH) statement headlined "India: UN experts alarmed by continuing abuses in Manipur" provided the reaction. discussed the violent episodes that have occurred in Manipur and also made some scathing statements about how things are getting worse for India's minority religious and ethnic groups.

The experts expressed grave worry about what they described as the Indian government's tardy and ineffective response to the physical and sexual violence as well as hate speech in Manipur.

Human rights advocates are being criminalized and harassed.

The experts encouraged the Indian government to increase assistance efforts in the impacted areas as they expressed worries about the prosecution and persecution of human rights advocates.

"We are horrified by allegations and pictures of gender-based violence that has been perpetrated against hundreds of women and girls of all ages, primarily belonging to the Kuki ethnic group. The experts said, "The claimed acts of brutality include gang rape, stripping women in public, fatal beatings, and burning them alive or dead.

It is also alarming that the vile and provocative speech that disseminated online and offline to explain the crimes committed against the Kuki ethnic minority, particularly women, because of their ethnicity and religious beliefs, appears to have preceded and incited the violence. We are especially concerned by reports that counterterrorism measures are being abused to justify violent and oppressive activities against ethnic and religious minorities, the group stated.

"By the middle of August 2023, there had apparently been over 300 injuries and an estimated 160 fatalities, the majority of whom belonged to the Kuki ethnic community. The fighting is also believed to have caused tens of thousands of people from the villages to be displaced, as well as the burning of thousands of homes and hundreds of churches, farmland, crops, and means of subsistence, according to UN experts.
