However, the BJP has criticised Mamata Banerjee, the state's chief minister, claiming that she has a habit of altering history and that they will not recognise April 15 as Bengal Day.
Poila Baisakh (Bengali New Year), which falls on April 15, will now be recognised as Bengal Day, according to news agency PTI. This decision was made by the West Bengal parliament on September 7th.
Even more, she said, the day would be commemorated despite of the state's governor, with whom CM Banerjee has been embroiled in a verbal battle.
In a House of 294 members, 167 voted in favour of the resolution, and it was therefore approved. While 62 BJP MLAs voted against it and the lone ISF MLA abstained, the BJP wants to celebrate June 20, the day the Bengal Assembly approved partition, as the state day.
According to specifics, a motion under Rule 169 was presented to the legislature, seeking to celebrate Poila Baisakh as "Bangla Diwas" and to make the state song, "Banglar Mat, Banglar Jol" (Bengal's Soil, Bengal's Water), by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
"I agree with the suggestion to make Rabindranath Tagore's "Banglar Mati Banglar Jol" the national anthem of Bengal. During her speech on the motion, Banerjee stated that the people of Bengal did not favour June 20, which is associated with murder and violence and was designated as the state's founding day by the act of partition.
Banerjee stated earlier this week that the assembly will choose the day to observe the anniversary because the Centre's selection of June 20 as the state's foundation day is "wrong."
It should be noted that on June 20, 1947, West Bengal MLAs voted in favour of the state's division while MLAs from East Bengal (which became East Pakistan) abstained.
